Aqua Health Clinic, located in Beijing’s trendy Sanlitun district, is nestled amid an array of high-end restaurants, nightlife spots, and luxury retail stores such as Apple, Armani, and Rolex. This sleek clinic offers a modern twist on traditional Chinese medicine by blending age-old healing techniques with contemporary wellness practices, aiming to revitalize both the body and the mind.

Designed by Waterfrom Design, the clinic takes the concept of ancient healing and transforms it into a refined, contemporary environment that breaks away from the dark, pungent spaces typically associated with traditional Chinese medicine. The team at Waterfrom Design sought to create a space that balances the timeless traditions of Chinese healing with the clean, light atmosphere of a modern spa, creating an inviting space for rejuvenation.

Rather than masking the traditional elements, Waterfrom Design embraces them, curating them in an artful, museum-like manner that the designers refer to as the “Exhibition of Frozen Time.” A striking example is a vast glass display wall showcasing nearly 100 specimens of Chinese medicinal plants and minerals, which is both an educational and aesthetic focal point. Chinese calligraphy and symbols of nature, such as bamboo and jade, seamlessly interact with more modern design elements, offering an intriguing fusion of the old and the new.

The 280-square-metre (3,013 sq. ft) clinic is divided into multiple areas that serve various purposes, including reception, a waiting area, skin and body care rooms, a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) clinic, and a tea bar. The interior is airy and open, with an emphasis on light and tranquility, inviting clients to unwind, let go of their daily stress, and immerse themselves in an environment designed for relaxation. Floor-to-ceiling windows, minimalist decor, and a calming color palette of soft neutrals all contribute to the serene atmosphere.

One of the standout features of Aqua Health Clinic is the tea bar, which uses innovative design to evoke the natural beauty of China’s landscapes. Six layers of acrylic rods in various shades of blue are illuminated to create the effect of mountains, rain, and fog—a subtle homage to nature’s rhythms. This tea bar serves as both a visual and sensory experience, highlighting the clinic’s focus on holistic healing and mindfulness.

Founded in 2008 by Nic Lee, Waterfrom Design brings a unique approach to interior design by blending art, culture, and modernity. With offices in Taipei and Shanghai, the firm is known for creating spaces that balance tradition and innovation, drawing from Lee’s background at the Pratt Institute in New York. Aqua Health Clinic is a perfect example of their expertise in transforming spaces into harmonious experiences that cater to both the mind and body.
